UPDATE as of 4:30 p.m. Monday: Chief Bob Vellias said the hot water heater tank caused the explosion. A pop-off valve on the tank, designed to release pressure should the heater malfunction, was capped, Vellias said.
INITIAL POST: A house on Clear Lake north of Eatonville was completely leveled when it exploded just before halftime of the Super Bowl Sunday, South Pierce Fire & Rescue said.
No one was injured, because the homeowner was watching the game elsewhere when the house exploded on the west side of the lake, Fire Chief Bob Vellias said.
The blast caused minor damage to residences as far as two homes south of the explosion, he added.
It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion, but crews were looking at a heating unit in the home and a hot water heater, Vellias said. There was no gas going to the one-story, 1200 square foot home, as all its systems were electric, the chief said.
