Power went out for nearly 17,000 people in Fircrest, University Place and Tacoma’s West End this morning, according to Tacoma Public Utilities.

The outage was reported about 7:45 a.m. and affected 16,682 customers. All but 1,700 regained electricity by 9 a.m. and roughly 180 people remained without power about 10 a.m.

A cause has not been determined.

“We had an equipment failure but we don’t know if the equipment failure caused the outage or the outage caused the equipment failure,” TPU spokeswoman Chris Gleason said.
