Shoplifting suspect fleeing police causes wreck that clogs I-5

A woman suspected of shoplifting at The Commons in Federal Way led police on a chase that ended with a wreck on Interstate 5 near the King-Pierce county line Friday, causing a major traffic jam a the height of the evening commute.

The incident began about 5 p.m. at the shopping mall on South 320th Street in Federal Way.

Police said a Federal Way police officer was trying to arrest the woman for shoplifting when she hopped into her car and drove straight at him.

Officers gave chase, and the woman drove onto southbound I-5 before trying to make a U-turn into the northbound lanes near the state truck scales not far from the Enchanted Parkway exit, police said.

Her car hit two vehicles before she came to a stop. Some minor injuries were reported.

Police arrested the woman at the scene of the wreck, and she is expected to be booked into jail for investigation of assault of a police officer, theft and traffic violations, Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said.
