Dave Valle to manage Mariners’ affiliate in Everett

Broadcaster Dave Valle, a former catcher, is heading back into uniform with the Mariners’ organization as the new manager at Everett, the club’s short-season affiliate in the Northwest League.

Valle, 53, spent the first 10 seasons of a 13-year big-league career with the Mariners from 1984-93. He joined the club’s broadcast team in 1997. He later served as an analyst on MLB Network.

The Everett AquaSox finished 44-32 last season and won the Northern Division under manager Rob Mummau before losing in the first round of the Northwest League playoffs to Vancouver, a Toronto affiliate.

Valle interviewed last November for the Mariners’ managerial opening that eventually went to Lloyd McClendon.

The Mariners selected Valle in second round of the 1978 draft, and he spent seven years in the minors before making his major-league debut. He also played for Boston, Milwaukee and Texas prior to retiring after the 1996 season.

Valle batted .237 in 970 career games with 77 homers and 350 RBIs. A skilled defensive catcher, he finished his career with a .992 fielding percentage while throwing out 36 percent of all base-stealers.
