Man found rummaging through rubble at Midland-area church arrested

Staff writerFebruary 12, 2014

When Central Pierce firefighters returned Tuesday to the burnt shell of a Midland-area church to ensure no embers still burned, they found a man digging through the rubble.

The crew identified themselves as firefighters, called police and ordered the man to stay where he was. The man ran.

One of the firefighters “chased him 200 yards, tackled him and held him” until law enforcement arrived, agency spokesman Ed Hrivnak said.

The man was arrested on suspicion of trespassing and theft. It’s unclear what items he was trying to steal but investigators have said they do not believe he was involved with Monday’s fire at Golgotha Baptist Church, 1611 85th St. E.
