Long Beach, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Bryson got a layup to fall with one second remaining to lift the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos to a 65-64 victory over the Long Beach State 49ers in a Big West Conference thriller at Walter Pyramid.
Bryson had 15 points while Alan Williams posted a team-high 16 for UCSB (16-6, 7-2 Big West), which has won seven of its last eight. Eric Childress and Kyle Boswell each chipped in 11 points.
Long Beach State (10-14, 6-4) was paced by 13 points from Tyler Lamb. Mike Caffey contributed 11 points and Branford Jones tacked on 10.
UCSB led, 37-30, at halftime. The Gauchos connected on 45 percent from the floor and 16-of-19 at the free-throw line in the first period. Long Beach State shot 41.4 percent and got only three points at the charity stripe.
The Gauchos led by as many as 13 points in the second half, but the 49ers rallied, ripping off a 17-4 run midway through the frame to even things at 60-60. The teams traded the lead four times the rest of the way, with the last switch occurring on Bryson's game-winner.
UCSB outscored the hosts, 21-13, at the free-throw line.
