Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Thomas scored all 18 of his points from beyond the arc to lead the Marquette Golden Eagles to an 81-72 win over the Xavier Musketeers in a Big East Conference matchup at the Bradley Center.
Jamil Wilson and Davante Gardner contributed 16 points each to help Marquette (15-10, 7-5 Big East) collect its third victory in a row. Todd Mayo added 13 points and six assists for the Golden Eagles.
Justin Martin paced the Musketeers (17-8, 7-5) with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. Matt Stainbrook and Myles Davis scored 12 points each, while Semaj Christon tallied 10 points and six assists. Dee Davis handed out a game-high seven assists despite clocking only 22 minutes.
The Golden Eagles connected on 50 percent of their field goal attempts and converted 6-of-7 at the free-throw line in the opening period en route to a 39-29 halftime lead. Xavier also shot 50 percent from the floor, but recorded 10 less attempts from the field than the hosts in the first half.
Although the Musketeers heated up to knock down 57.1 percent of their field goal tries including a 4-of-8 clip from 3-point range after the break, they were not able to make it a one-possession game at any point in the second stanza. Marquette protected its advantage by making good on 18-of-20 attempts at the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes of the contest.
Xavier came up short despite finishing with a 32-20 edge in total rebounds. The Golden Eagles assisted 17 of their 24 makes from the floor and committed only five turnovers. The Musketeers were guilty of 19 miscues, which Marquette converted into 27 points.
