Mudslides close section of SR 509 in Tacoma

UPDATE as of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday: The city said some rocks are still falling, and that the road will stay closed overnight. Crews plan to reevaluate Wednesday morning.

INITIAL POST: A series of mudslides Monday have closed a section of state Route 509 in Tacoma.

The biggest slide occurred in the 4200 block of Marine View Drive/ SR 509 and is covering nearly the entire road.

Police have shut down Marine View Drive between East 11th Street and Slayden Road. Tacoma Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said it's unknown when the road will reopen.
