Hit-and-run driver hits rail car in Tacoma, spills diesel fuel

Staff writerFebruary 18, 2014

A hit-and-run driver lost control in the rain late Monday and struck a rail car in Tacoma, spilling about 100 gallons of diesel fuel.

The accident happened about 11:40 p.m. at Progress Rail Yard in the 4000 block of South Frontage Road.

Police said the vehicle first hit a chain link fence, destroying about 200 feet of fence, before traveling southeast through the yard and hitting an unoccupied refrigerator rail car on the tracks.

The driver fled the scene and has not been identified.

A Tacoma fire HAZMAT team and the Department of Ecology took care of the diesel spill.
