Mudslide cleared from North Schuster Parkway in Tacoma

Staff writerFebruary 18, 2014

UPDATE as of 7:30 p.m. The city said crews are just now reopening the road.

UPDATE as of 4 p.m. All southbound lanes are closed between McCarver Street and the access to Dock Street, and all northbound lanes are open, said Matt Fengler, assistant manager of street operations.

They expect to have the road cleared about 7 p.m.

No vehicles were involved in the slide, which took out trees, he said. No one was injured.

The debris stretches between 30 and 50 yards, he said.

"It's been a few years since we've had them there," he said of mudslides along the road. "It's just the saturation, with the rain we've had over the last few days."

INITIAL POST: A mudslide about 3 p.m. in the 600 block of North Schuster Parkway closed at least some lanes of the roadway.

Drivers reported that southbound lanes were not accessible, and that some northbound lanes were blocked.

The city could not immediately confirm which lanes were closed, but expected to know more about 4 p.m.
