Brief worship service Friday to mark spot where toddler was killed

Staff writerFebruary 18, 2014

A ceremony Friday will honor Daveena Sanchez, a two-year-old girl who Sheriff's deputies said was killed by her father at their Tacoma-area apartment Feb. 12.

Associated Ministries holds the ceremonies, called "Moments of Blessing," in an attempt to reclaim places where homicides have happened.

Daveena's blessing will be 12:30 p.m. at the Woodmark Apartments, 2425 96th St. S.

The public is invited to the brief worship services, which are meant to support loved ones of homicide victims, as well as the community.

Clergy are asked to vest for the blessings, which are marked by bamboo poles adorned with colored ribbons.

Salvador Sanchez-Orozco pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder Thursday in his daughter's death.
