Recap: St Johns vs. Butler

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - JaKarr Sampson scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the St. John's Red Storm rolled over the Butler Bulldogs, 77-52, in a Big East duel at Madison Square Garden.

Jamal Branch added 10 points and Orlando Sanchez collected 11 rebounds, both off the bench, for St. John's (18-9, 8-6 Big East), which has won six straight.

Khyle Marshall netted 16 points, all in the first half, to pace Butler (12-14, 2-12), which has lost five straight. Kellen Dunham contributed 13 points and Alex Barlow chipped in 11.

Butler led, 33-30, at halftime. The Bulldogs shot 48 percent from the floor in the first period, while St. John's mustered a 36.7 percent effort. Marshall scored for the final time with a dunk on the final play of the half, as the Bulldogs entered intermission with the momentum.

The Bulldogs lost their rhythm after the break, recording only seven field goals on 20 percent shooting. The Red Storm took advantage, easily pulling away by netting 60.7 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes.

St. John's owned the interior, outrebounding Butler, 51-30, and outscoring the Bulldogs, 38-22, in the paint.
