Information sought in fatal shooting of Orting man

Michael Compton, 53, was killed outside his Orting home.

Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever shot an Orting man outside his home Wednesday.

Police have not yet identified suspects in the slaying of Michael Compton, 53, but said he was killed after interrupting a burglary in his garage in the 500 block of Ford Lane Southwest.

The shooting happened sometime between 1 to 3 a.m. His wife found his body about 3:15 a.m. The Medical Examiner said he was killed by a shotgun wound to the head.

Investigators are unsure whether the shooting was deliberate or happened during a struggle.

Anyone who saw suspicious people or vehicles in Compton’s neighborhood in the early morning hours of Wednesday is asked to call police.

Anonymous tipsters with information on the case can call Crime Stoppers’ tip line at 253-591-5959.

Friends have said Compton was an avid hunter and worked at Key Bank in fraud and loss prevention.
