Cullowhee, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Sumler scored a game-high 18 points as the Western Carolina Catamounts captured a 70-52 win over The Citadel in a Southern Conference matchup at the Ramsey Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Catamounts (17-12, 10-4 SoCon) were James Sinclair and Brandon Boggs with 13 and 12 points, respectively, the former clearing a team-best eight rebounds as WCU won for the fifth time in six tries.
The Bulldogs (4-25, 0-14) remain all alone at the bottom of the conference standings following a 17th straight setback. Ashton Moore tallied 16 points and Matt Van Scyoc pitched in with 10 and five boards off the bench for a team that has won only once in the last 22 outings and has not defeated another Division I foe since Nov. 12 (Presbyterian).
The Citadel scored the first points of the day, but it wasn't long before the hosts moved out to a commanding 15-3 advantage and cruised to a 35-25 advantage at the break by limiting the Bulldogs to only 10 field goals through the first 20 minutes of action.
The Catamounts pulled away in the second half on the strength of 46.2 percent shooting from the field at the offensive end of the floor and a defensive effort which limited the visitors to only seven baskets.
Kenneth Hall notched four blocked shots for Western Carolina, the team coming up with a total of nine, as they set a new school single-season record for rejections with 142.
