Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Kenny Gaines scored a game-high 27 points, shooting 5-of-9 behind the 3-point line, as the Georgia Bulldogs pounded the South Carolina Gamecocks, 73-56, in SEC action at Colonial Life Arena.
Joining Gaines in double figures were Marcus Thornton and Brandon Morris with 12 points apiece, the former also clearing 10 rebounds and blocking three shots for the Bulldogs (15-11, 9-5 SEC) as they won for the fifth time in the last six outings.
Sindarius Thornwell dropped in a team-best 18 points for the Gamecocks (10-17, 3-11), but he shot only 4-of-15 from the floor along the way. Brenton Williams accounted for 16 points and Michael Carrera a game-high 12 rebounds as the team bowed for the second time in as many games.
A back-and-forth battle throughout the first half, the teams found themselves knotted at the break, 34-34. USC connected on only 38.5 percent from the floor in the first half, but half of the team's 10 made field goals came from 3- point range.
The second half belonged to Georgia as the visitors opened the period on a 16-1 scoring burst and never looked back, limiting the hosts to a woeful 5- of-31 shooting from the field in the period.
