Tacoma police seek robber who hid in back seat of woman's car

Tacoma police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who hid in the back seat of a woman’s car to rob her.

The incident happened Feb. 13 in the Safeway parking lot, 1624 72nd St. E.

The man approached a woman and asked her for a light, then hid in the back seat of her car while she went into the store, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

After the woman returned to her car and was driving on Portland Avenue, the man climbed into the front seat and snatched her purse. The woman’s screams startled him enough that he ran from the car towards Champions Centre.

Cool said the man likely lives near 72nd Street East and Portland Avenue and uses public transportation. He might have been carrying a bag of clothing during the robbery.

He is described as black, 20 to 30 years old and 6-foot with a slender build. The robber was wearing a black jacket with a hood, black skull cap or doo-rag, long gray shirt, black nylon sweat pants with a thin stripe and white running shoes with either blue or green trim. He was also wearing a watch on his right wrist and carrying a cigarette.

Anyone with information on the robbery or the man’s identity is asked to call the Tacoma Police Department at 253-591-5968.
