Lakewood-based Music Centers sold to Maryland company

Lakewood-based Music Centers Inc., which owns seven stores in the South Sound region and one in Renton, has been bought by a national company.

Music & Arts, based in Frederick, Md., has about 128 locations nationwide and specializes in the sale and rental of musical instruments, instrument repairs, and music lessons.

The sale was announced Monday. The companies, both privately held, did not disclose the sale price, nor other details about the companies including number of employees.

Music Centers, Inc. began as Lakewood Music in 1955, according to a company history on its website. It now has eight stores in Washington: Renton, Federal Way, Tacoma, Lakewood, Lacey, Olympia and two locations in Puyallup.
