Tacoma officer hits man with police car

Staff writerFebruary 26, 2014

A man was taken to the hospital Wednesday night when a Tacoma police officer intentionally hit him with a patrol car as he tried to run from authorities, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The man, who is about 25, complained of leg pain after he was hit and was taken to the hospital, Cool said. She did not have further information about the man's condition.

She said the officer tried to contact the man about 9:10 p.m. in the 1500 block of South J Street, when he turned and started to run.

The officer hit the man with the car, and he ran a few blocks, until he was taken into custody in the 1100 block of South 13th Street, Cool said.

She did not immediately know what caused the officer to approach the man, but said a gun from the man was recovered at the scene.

Cool said the officer would be on administrative leave, per procedure, as the use of force is investigated.
