Curtis High School biology teacher Michael Edison Allen, who is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old Curtis student,  has resigned from his position at the University Place school.

His resignation is effective Saturday, University Place Superintendent Patti Banks said. Also, Banks said, she filed an official complaint about Allen with the state Office of Professional Practices that investigates misconduct by teachers and has the power to revoke a teacher’s state certification.

Curtis, 33, pleaded not guilty to five counts of sexual misconduct with a minor in Pierce County Superior Court Feb. 12. He was released on $25,000 bail, with a trial date set for April 7.
