A Federal Way singer so overcome with stage fright that she's adopted the stage name of "Music Box" made it on to the NBC reality talent show "The Voice" on Tuesday.

Music Box was chosen by celebrity coach Shakira.

The 28-year-old contestant sang “You Gotta Be” during the show’s signature blind auditions.

“I want someone like you on my team. Someone who can demonstrate how amazing you can be when you set yourself on that goal,” Shakira told Music Box.

Music Box didn’t get the full intro treatment that some of the contestants get but NBC said she is a single mother who is trying to make it as a full-time singer.

In a conference call with reporters on Wednesday Music Box said she adopted her unusual name at the age of 18 in order to combat nerves.

“I really struggle with stage fright. That’s why I named myself Music Box – to have an alter ego."

Why Music Box? "It chose me," she said. “I feel that the music lives within me. I can relate to a music box.”

The singer's stage fright came back during her "Voice" audition but she overcame it, she said.

"That was my chance to prove to myself that I can conquer fear,” Music Box said.

The singer said she performs with rock bands in the Seattle area and spent two years at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Music Box said she had hoped Shakira would choose her during the taped auditions. "She really understood me as an artist and she really understood me as a mother."

Music Box chose "You Gotta Be" by the British pop and soul singer Des'ree because she could relate to it. “Every day I have to wake up as a single mother and tell myself: 'You can do it. You’re strong enough'."

This marks the sixth season of “The Voice” with returning celebrity musicians/coaches Adam Levine, Usher and Blake Shelton along with Shakira. Carson Daly continues as host.

Tacoma singer Vicci Martinez made it to third place during the show’s first season. Last year Tacoma singer Stephanie Anne Johnson climbed well up the ladder before being eliminated.

The show’s format features four stages of competition: blind auditions, battle rounds, knockouts and finally, the live performance shows.
