Mandrell Worthy scored 24 points to lead No. 6 Eastside Catholic to a 53-39 victory over University (Spokane) in the 3A boys state quarterfinals Thursday at the Tacoma Dome.

Worthy scored 11 of the Crusaders’ final 13 points to help close out the victory.

“This is all new to these guys,” coach Bill Liley said of Eastside Catholic’s first tournament appearance since 1999. “There were some nerves today and we had to grind them through it. I think we’ll be a heck of a lot better tomorrow.”

Eastside Catholic held the Titans without a basket for nearly the first four minutes of the game. Worthy scored four early points to help the Crusaders take an 8-0 lead before University could get on the board.

A 3-pointer from Ben Kuiper ended the Titans scoring drought as University rallied to tie the game at 11-all.

After trailing 29-18 at halftime, University trimmed the deficit to 35-30 early in the third quarter. Robert Little connected on a pair of 3-pointers to help rally the Titans. Little’s 11 points led the way for University.

The Crusaders answered with a 3-pointer by Nathan Christie to once again extend the lead. Worthy then took control down the stretch the seal the win.
