Cedar City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Kennedy scored 16 points off the bench and the Southern Utah Thunderbirds snapped the nation's longest losing streak with a 77-71 triumph over North Dakota in a Big Sky Conference bout at Centrum Arena.
Cal Hanks and Juwan Major both netted 13 points for SUU (2-26, 1-18 Big Sky), which had lost 26 in a row after defeating NAIA opponent Arizona Christian in its season opener. Casey Oliverson added 11 points for the home team, while A.J. Hess collected 10 rebounds.
For North Dakota (15-15, 12-8), which snapped a four-game winning streak, Jamal Webb poured in a game-high 18 points, Aaron Anderson scored 14 and Jaron Nash chipped in 12.
SUU outshot North Dakota from the field in the first half, 44 percent to 33.3 percent, and made 10-of-12 at the free-throw line to take a 32-28 lead into intermission.
The Thunderbirds' advantage swelled to as many as 16 with 6:17 to play. North Dakota used a late surge to bring its deficit to just two in the final minute, but it could not complete the comeback.
SUU outscored North Dakota in the paint, 44-34, and netted 21 points off of 12 North Dakota turnovers.
