Sunnyside girls take fourth place at state tourney

Behind the backcourt of Emilee Maldonado and Natalie Bazan, the Sunnyside girls basketball team was able to earn a decisive 56-42 victory in the Class 3A state basketball tournament Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

The win gives the Grizzlies (24-4) a fourth- place finish, the team’s best in history.

All tournament long, both Maldonado (10 points, five rebounds) and Bazan (16 points, seven rebounds) were a force in the Grizzlies backcourt.

Not once in Sunnyside’s victory over University did the Grizzlies’ guards make it comfortable for the Titans. It’s been something Sunnyside coach Enrique Puente has become accustomed to.

“It’s an amazing feeling (to win) and these girls deserve it,” he said. “They have a never say die attitude…these girls believe in their teammates and they (both) really stepped up. You know, big time players step up in big time games.”

University (11-16) finishes in sixth place.
