Armed robbery prompts SWAT callout in Tacoma

Staff writerMarch 11, 2014

It started with one teen robbing another of his iPhone and ended with a SWAT team surrounding a Tacoma home.

Police said a 15-year-old boy was walking in the 1500 block of South Ainsworth Avenue when another teen in a green Halloween mask approached him about 7:30 p.m.

The suspect allegedly displayed a handgun in his waistband, threatened to shoot the victim and demanded his phone. As he turned to run, the robber flung off his mask and the victim recognized him.

Police went to the alleged robber’s house in the 1300 block of South M Street but the boy refused to come outside. At least one of three other people inside the home came out.

After several hours of a SWAT standout, the 14-year-old boy surrendered around 1 a.m. and was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery.
