SWAT team surrounds Federal Way apartments, arrests suspect in robberies

A SWAT team surrounded an apartment complex Tuesday night in Federal Way where they arrested a man suspected in multiple armed robberies.

They took the 29-year-old into custody about 8 p.m. at South 288th Street and Military Road South.

Police said the man has robbed nearby grocery and convenience stores, and several pedestrians. He has used physical force in the robberies and has been armed with a knife and pepper spray, officers said.

Officers removed everyone from the four-plex apartment building as they worked to arrest the man, who they believed to be armed and dangerous.

They spent about four hours trying to get him to come out, before he surrendered, spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said. After surrounding the apartments they tried to communicate with the man, and eventually notified him that a police dog would be sent in. The K-9 dragged the suspect by his pant leg, but the man only suffered scratches, Schrock said.

The suspect was wanted on an escape warrant from the Department of Corrections for failing to report in with them, and corrections worked with Federal Way police to find the man, Schrock said.

No weapons were immediately seen, but police were still searching the apartment, she said.
