Robbery of iPhone prompts SWAT callout in Tacoma

March 12, 2014

It started with one teen robbing another of his iPhone and ended with a SWAT team surrounding a Tacoma home.

Police said a 15-year-old boy was walking in the 1500 block of South Ainsworth Avenue on Monday when another teen in a green Halloween mask approached him about 7:30 p.m.

The robber showed a handgun in his waistband, threatened to shoot the victim and demanded his phone, police said. As he turned to run, the robber flung off his mask and the victim recognized him.

Officers went to the 14-year-old suspect’s house in the 1300 block of South M Street, but the boy refused to come outside and the SWAT team was called. At least one of three other people inside the home came out.

After a several-hour standoff, the boy surrendered about 1 a.m. Tuesday and was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery.
