OLYMPIA, Wash. — A bill that would retain a $40 fee on real-estate sales which pays for homelessness prevention in Washington state has passed through the Legislature.
Senate Bill 5875 passed through the Senate Thursday night on a 41-8 vote and then passed through the House on a vote of 74-22 shortly afterward. It will to go Gov. Jay Inslee for his signature.
Jan Angel, R-Port Orchard, who chairs the Senate Financial Institutions, Housing and Insurance Committee, took some heat after she stalled the measure in February, denying it a vote citing concerns about extending the fee indefinitely.
Under the amended bill, the $40 fee would remain in effect through June 2019.
Angel said extending the fee would allow time to create a task force to find a better solution.
