The situation: Reducing the weight of your pack and its load will pay dividends for your body on multi-day backpack trips.

A solution: Mountainsmith has developed the Mystic 65 Backpack that weighs 5 pounds, 2 ounces. It is the largest pack in the company’s Mountainlight series. The top-load pack has a separate sleeping bag compartment, front panel pocket/pass through window, side stash pockets and tool mounts.

The details: The pack can be expanded up to 70 cubic liters of capacity capable of hauling 55 pounds of gear. It features an ICS Cup (Illiac Crest Shelf) hipbelt that transfers and locks the pack load onto the hips and the Delta Wing compression system to pull the load into the lumbar region. The Lumbar Control Point pad on the lower backpanel secures the pack load against the user’s major weight-bearing point, the lumbar/sacrum region. The Breezeway suspension backpanel keeps you cool on the trail.

It fits torsos measuring 17-22 inches and waistbelts measuring 30-56 inches.

Price: The suggested retail price is $219.95.
