Lakewood man dies while skiing at Crystal Mountain Resort

A 66-year-old Lakewood man died Friday while skiing at Crystal Mountain, said resort spokesman Tiana Enger.

The man, a former member of Crystal Mountain’s volunteer safety patrol, is believed to have suffered a heart attack, according to the ski area. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Philip Spilger.

The ski patrol received a call at 12:38 p.m. that a skier in the Eagle’s Nest area had collapsed and was unresponsive. The ski patrol was on the scene and started advanced life support at 12:40 p.m.

Spilger, who was skiing with friends, was declared dead at 1 p.m.
