Pierce County prosecutors charged a Tacoma transient with first-degree robbery after he allegedly stole candy and pulled a gun on store employees who demanded he return the sweet treats.
The 18-year-old man pleaded not guilty and is being held in Pierce County Jail on $80,000 bail.
The holdup happened Saturday at a store in the 1400 block of South 72nd Street.
Employees told officers the man displayed a handgun after they confronted him about shoplifting candy. They backed off and let him leave after seeing the weapon.
Police reviewed surveillance footage and found the man nearby. He admitted to carrying a BB gun, court records indicate, saying he carried it for protection because he lives on the streets.
He also confessed to the robbery and said he was being stupid, according to charging papers.
