Lakewood man who abandoned sick puppies on JBLM sentenced to 2 days in jail

Staff writerApril 8, 2014

A 28-year-old Lakewood man convicted of abandoning nine sick puppies in the woods on Joint Base Lewis-McChord was sentenced Tuesday to two days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Christopher G. Merrick previously was convicted at a bench trial of two counts of second-degree animal cruelty, which is a gross misdemeanor.

Superior Court Judge Ronald Culpepper also placed Merrick on two years probation and forbade him from owning dogs during that time.

Prosecutors said Merrick abandoned the puppies, some sick and malnourished, in September 2011 because he did not want to pay the fees necessary to leave them at the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County.

Passersby later found the puppies and reported their discovery to authorities. A Lakewood animal control officer acting on a tip later began an investigation and identified Merrick as the person who left the puppies without food, water or shelter.
