Tacoma couple arguing in street allegedly turn on cops who tried to break it up

The couple was allegedly drunk and high on methamphetamine as they stood arguing in the street outside Tacoma’s Point Defiance Park. A Ruston police officer decided to intervene Friday night after they seemed oblivious to almost being struck by a passing car.

The officer asked what the problem was. The 22-year-old woman told him they were in the middle of a dispute. When the officer turned to ask the 25-year-old man if that was true, the woman allegedly grabbed the cop’s arm and began yelling for him to leave her boyfriend alone.

It went downhill from there.

The officer allegedly broke free of the woman’s grip, which infuriated the boyfriend, who screamed at the officer for touching his girlfriend.

The man then got into a “fighting stance” and raised his fists, according to court records. The officer called for backup and pointed a taser at the man, who refused to lie on the ground.

When a Tacoma officer arrived and tried to place the man in handcuffs, the man allegedly took a swing at the officer. The officer was able to block his punch.

The man “was punched in the face and head multiple times and brought under control and arrested,” charging papers state.

During the ordeal, the girlfriend continued to try and stop police from arresting her boyfriend.

Pierce County prosecutors have charged the man with third-degree assault and the woman with obstructing a law enforcement officer.

The woman was released on her own recognizance after pleading not guilty Monday. The man was ordered held in lieu of $10,000 bail.
