Tacoma officer involved in accident while responding to call

Staff writerApril 18, 2014

A Tacoma police officer was struck by another vehicle while responding to a burglary-in-progress Friday.

The accident took place about 11:45 a.m. at North 11th Street and Union Avenue.

The officer was driving north on Union Avenue when a woman in a minivan heading east on North 11th Street hit him, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said. The patrol car then struck a telephone pole, trapping the officer inside.

It was not immediately clear who was at fault. The officer was traveling with his lights and sirens on and was rushing to assist a fellow officer who had a suspected burglar at gunpoint, Cool said.

The officer was taken to a hospital to get checked out. The other driver was not injured.

The patrol car was totaled in the accident.
