WSECU warns members about fraudulent text messages

A sample of the text that some Washington State Employees Credit Union members and nonmembers may have received the past two weekends.


The Washington State Employees Credit Union is warnings its members and non-members about fraudulent text messages that have been sent the past two weekends that appear to come from WSECU.

The messages, sent to cell phone numbers with a 360 area code, state that a credit card has been deactivated and to call a number to reactivate it.

The credit union said it is using its own social media channels, email and its website to educate people that if they receive texts like this, they should never respond.

"Multiple text messages went out with different response phone numbers," the credit union said in a news release. "As we learn of each number, we are working with our partners to shut these fraudulent phone numbers down."

Anyone who responded to the text should call the credit union at 800-562-0999. That number can be reached 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. After hours, call 866-861-5416 to speak to a representative to have the card blocked.

The credit union added:

"Texts of this nature are an attempt to obtain card information to commit fraud. How do they get the numbers?  They use a 'shotgun' approach robo-texting hundreds if not thousands of phone number combinations when sending texts and hope for a match. This is why both members and non-members receive the texts."
