Pierce County Councilman Rick Talbert said Monday he will take a three-week leave of absence to undergo surgery for kidney cancer.
Talbert, 48, said he will have surgery May 5 to remove a cancerous growth on his kidney.
He said he expects to make a full recovery and return to work by the end of May.
Talbert, D-Tacoma, also plans to file for re-election to a second, four-year term once finling starts May 12.
Talbert was elected to the County Council in November 2010.
“You never want to hear the “C” word,” Talbert said Monday. “I’m relieved to have a plan and look forward to recovering and taking care of my responsibilities.”
While he’s away, he won’t be able to attend meetings. But Talbert plans to manage correspondence once he’s back home and recuperating from surgery.
“I wanted to make sure people understood I wasn’t just absent,” he said. “There was a reason for it all.”
Talbert also is chairman of Pierce Transit’s board and a member of the Tacoma-Pierce County Board of Health. He is a co-founder of the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center and is its board chairman.
