Be warned: Scammers impersonating police in Bonney Lake

Staff writerApril 29, 2014

Bonney Lake police are warning the public about scammers who are impersonating officers in an attempt to get money.

About a dozen or so residents have reported the calls over the last month. The scam goes something like this:

They spoof the call so the victim’s caller ID shows the call is from the Police Department. The scammer then tells the victim that there is a warrant out for their arrest or they owe a fine that must be paid immediately.

“They get kind of pushy with them and threaten to come to their work or house and arrest them,” Officer Daron Wolschleger said.

“We’re just trying to get the word out there that the Police Department will never ask for money over the phone.”

Police ask that anybody who receives a call from the scammers report it.
