Federal Way man who drowned was playing with toy helicopter

Staff writerApril 30, 2014

A 74-year-old man who drowned Tuesday evening in Federal Way was playing with a remote control helicopter when he somehow fell into the pond, police said Wednesday.

He was identified as Gilbert Starkey by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office Wednesday, which said heart disease also contributed to his death.

Family members found the man about 7:45 p.m. floating face down in Ponce De Leon Lake and performed CPR. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was flying the helicopter from his backyard in the 2600 block of Southwest 323rd Street when he tried to retrieve something from the water, fell in and could not get back out, police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said.
