An alert reader called this week to ask what a survey crew was doing at the Pearl Street entrance to Point Defiance Park in Tacoma.
The answer: Planning for a future roundabout.
Metro Parks Tacoma officials say a new park entrance is coming – at some point.
"No funding is in place but we needed the survey for preliminary design and better estimates for grant applications..." said Curtis Hancock, the program administrator for the agency's Destination Point Defiance plan.
The roundabout is part of the agency's plan to develop the park's triangle area, which could someday include a pedestrian bridge to the ferry, open space for seasonal events and a new parking area.
Last year, the parks agency told the owner of the go-karts business that has operated in the triangle for nearly three decades to vacate the premises when his lease expires at the end of 2014.
