A volunteer group created in memory of a Tacoma teenager shot and killed in 2011 will hold a dinner Sunday to honor mothers who have lost children to violence.
Shalisa Hayes’ son, Billy Ray Shirley III, was shot and killed outside a Nalley Valley warehouse in August 2011.
He had wanted to create an East Side community center, which has been the goal of the teen group Hayes organized in her son’s honor, Team Billy Ray.
In between fundraisers, the team hosts volunteer events, including Sunday’s Mothers of Magnitude evening. The teens honor the mothers in attendance by serving them dinner and performing different acts for entertainment. There are also prayers and prizes.
The event is in its second year, and Hayes said connecting with mothers can be difficult. She asked mothers interested in participating to call her at 253-254-6549.
The event will be from 4-7 p.m. at the Star Center, 3873 S. 66th St.
