Lake Sylvia to close for kids-only event

May 25, 2014

The state will close Lake Sylvia to fishing 12 hours prior to the kids-only fishing event next month.

The closure will be in place from 6 p.m. June 6 through 5:59 a.m. June 7.

Closing the Grays Harbor County lake is necessary to ensure a safe and successful kids fishing event. The fish for the event will be planted the night before to give the fish a chance to acclimate to the lake.

Organizers of the event at the state park donate time, effort and money to raise and stock trout into the lake. Approximately 350 kids are expected to take part in this year’s event.

Sponsored by the Montesano Moose Lodge and local businesses, the derby will run from 6-11 a.m. June 7. Preregistration will be June 6 from 3-8 p.m. at the Montesano Moose Lodge. There will be prizes in the following age categories: 13-15 years old, 10-12 and 6 and younger. Breakfast will be available from 7-10 a.m. for $3 per person.
