The status of left-hander James Paxtons return to the big-league rotation remains on hold as the Mariners continue to assess his bounce-back recovery after pitching three innings Saturday in a rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma.
Paxton reported some typical triceps tightness following that 62-pitch outing, which marked his first game action since his removal from an April 8 start against the Angels because of a strained back muscle.
Im not sure what the next step is, manager Lloyd McClendon said, but if theres any soreness at all, I know well be very cautious.
If judged healthy, Paxton is positioned to replace Brandon Maurer for Thursdays series finale against the Angels. Maurer is 1-3 with a 6.99 ERA in six starts.
