A medical issue might have been responsible for a wreck Tuesday on Interstate 5 in Tacoma that involved five vehicles, according to the Washington State Patrol.

No one was seriously injured in the crash, which tied up traffic for hours, spokesman Guy Gill said

The crash happened about 10:30 a.m. in the southbound freeway lanes near 38th Street, when a pickup truck hit another vehicle, which spun into a third vehicle, Gill said.

The pickup then hit the jersey barrier at a roughly 90-degree angle and came to rest on its roof, sending chunks of concrete into the northbound lanes, according to the State Patrol. The concrete pieces were big enough to disable two northbound vehicles that hit them, Gill said.

Troopers were still investigating the crash later Tuesday, but it appeared the pickup driver might have had a medical incident. The driver, a 55-year-old Salem, Ore., man, admitted to blacking out at the wheel, and was being kept at the hospital overnight as a precaution, Gill said.

The man has a history of medical issues, but was alert and conscious when troopers spoke with him, Gill said. There was no reason to think drugs or alcohol were involved, the trooper said.

Four people were taken to the hospital, for minor injuries and evaluation.

All lanes of the freeway were reopened by early afternoon.
