Franciscan affiliate Harrison Medical Center may move hospital from Bremerton to Silverdale

Franciscan Health System's Harrison Medical Center may move its main hospital campus from its traditional site in Bremerton to Silverdale, Franciscan announced recently.

Franciscan is based in Tacoma.

The Silverdale site is already the location of Harrison's newly opened orthopedic center.

The Silverdale site would offer Harrison more room to expand than the hospital's hillside site in Bremerton, it would put the hospital closer to patients in wealthy Bainbridge Island and to towns on the Olympia Peninsula.

The move would also put the Kitsap County hospital farther from Kitsap Peninsula residents and from Franciscan's relatively new St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor.

If Harrison moved its hospital to Silverdale, Kitsap County's principal shopping area, it would maintain outpatient services in Bremerton, the hospital said.

Harrison is among the latest hospitals to affiliate with Franciscan. Franciscan is part of Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives.

Under the Franciscan umbrella are Tacoma's St. Joseph Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way, St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood, St. Elizabeth Hospital in Enumclaw, St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, Highline Medical Center in Burien and Harrison.

Harrison's board said it will consult with local civic and business leaders, community residents, medical staff members and employees before making its decision.  That decision will be announced in October.
