A teenage girl fended off a man who tried to snatch her 2-year-old cousin at a Tacoma park Saturday, police said.
The 14-year-old girl took several children to the playground at Lincoln Park Saturday evening and noticed the man, who she later told police seemed weird.
She instructed the older kids to stay close to the younger kids as the man walked toward them. He grabbed the arm of the toddler, who was at the bottom of a slide, and began to pull him away. The girl yanked the boy back to her. The defendant again started counting the kids in her group and chanting to himself I can do this, I can do this, according to court documents. He charged the girl and pretended to punch her in an attempt to get the boy away, police said.
Another man eventually intervened and kept him from getting close to the children.
Police arrested the 42-year-old man, who appeared to be on drugs. He was booked into Pierce County Jail as John Doe because he refused to give his name. He was later identified through fingerprints.
Pierce County prosecutors on Monday charged him with second-degree attempted kidnapping and two counts of fourth-degree assault. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.
