World Cup frenzy imminent at bars in Tacoma, Lacey and Puyallup

Staff writerJune 6, 2014

Wars may come and go, dictators may rise and fall and dreams may wither or be reborn.

Still, come what may, the planet takes a break every fourth summer to celebrate what generally we call soccer, and what the world knows as football.

Also, this quadrennial revel – the World Cup -  offers a great excuse to drink beer in the morning.

In Tacoma, the truest aficionados will likely find their way to Doyle’s Public House at 208 St. Helens Ave.

Whether for the opening game between host-nation Brazil and Croatia next Thursday, or for the opening United States match against Ghana on June 16, or for matches featuring teams from Ecuador, Mexico, Korea, Algeria, France, Germany, Belgium or a number of other nations – Doyle’s will welcome guests both to its main room and into a 4,400-sq.-ft. tent set temporarily into a parking lot next door.

Owner Russ Heaton said Doyle’s will be offering drinks specials, either on beer or featuring Cachaca, a rum-like Brazilian spirit distilled from sugar cane.

“We’ll see close to 10,000 people,” Heaton said earlier this week, recalling the crowds that appeared for the World Cup held in South Africa four years ago.

“It’s like St. Patrick’s Day all month long,” he said.

Along with beverages, Heaton said Doyle’s would be welcoming a local food truck. Also, he has arranged with car dealer Titus-Will to offer half-off prices and pickup and delivery for oil changes during weekdays games.

Patrons can also look forward to various giveaways, plus the Sounders’ band, during selected games.

• In Puyallup, soccer (or football, or futbol, or “The Beautiful Game”) fans can gather at Twisted Kilt Irish Pub, where bartender Katie Betzina says customers can expect 99-cent beers whenever the U.S. scores. There will also be a chance to enter a drawing for a trip to Las Vegas. The Twisted Kilt is located at 109 S. Meridian.

• The Loose Wheel (715 River Road in Puyallup and 6108 Sixth Ave. in Tacoma) will be offering specials on Budweiser beer, according to co-owner Emily DeCicco.

• O’Blarney’s Irish Pub & Restaurant (4411 Martin Way. E. in Lacey) will offer specials on Mexican beer during all games, and additional food and drink specials and prizes will be offered during games in which the U.S. team plays.
