A man in his early 40s was killed and a woman was in critical condition Sunday morning after the car they were traveling in left the roadway near Auburn and crashed into a power pole, police said.

According to a press release from the Auburn Police Department:

The woman, also in her 40s, was driving southbound in the 700 block of Auburn Way North just after 2 a.m. Sunday with the man in the passenger seat when the crash occurred.

She was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with critical injuries. The man, who police say did not appear to be wearing his seat belt, died at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and it was not immediately clear what caused the crash. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
