A deer running across Interstate 5 in Lakewood on Monday morning was hit by a truck and then crashed through the windshield.

GUY GILL — Washington State Patrol

A driver hit a deer that ran across both the south and northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Bridgeport Way Southwest Monday morning, the State Patrol said.

The crash happened about 10 a.m., when the deer ran across the southbound lanes, hopped the jersey barrier into the northbound lanes, and struck the front of a truck, trooper Guy Gill said.

The animal flipped and went through the windshield, essentially landing in the driver's lap, according to the State Patrol.

"The driver did an amazing job staying calm and safely pulling the truck to the shoulder," Gill said, adding that the driver had minor injuries, but was otherwise OK.

The deer did not survive the wreck.
