Orioles' Machado handed five-game suspension

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado received a five-game suspension and an undisclosed fine Tuesday for his actions in Sunday's game against Oakland.

Machado's bat flew down the third-base line and close to Alberto Callaspo after he swung and missed on a Fernando Abad pitch with two outs in the eighth. Abad's previous pitch came inside on Machado, warranting a glare from Machado towards the mound.

The benches subsequently cleared after the bat toss and Machado and Abad were both ejected from the game.

Abad received an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing at Machado.

Machado is listed in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Boston Red Sox, a likely indicator that he plans to appeal the ruling.
