South Sound gas prices frozen in a narrow range

Staff writerJune 10, 2014

In most years, South Sound gas prices are headed downward during June after peaking at Memorial Day.

Not this year.

Gas prices have been stuck in a narrow range around $3.90 a gallon for more than a month at most South Sound service stations.

GasPrices.com reports the average unleaded regular gas price in the Tacoma area Tuesday is $3.92 a gallon, the same price as on Monday and the same price it sold for a week ago.

A month ago, the average price of a gallon of unleaded regular was just three cents lower, $3.89 a gallon.

A year ago, the prices, headed downward since the end of May, were 20 cents a gallon lower.

Tacoma-area gas prices Tuesday were some 29 cents higher than the national average.  Western Washington gas prices are normally higher than the national average because of higher taxes and less competition in this market.

Gas was available Tuesday at more than 20 cents less a gallon than the Tacoma average at three Pierce County retailers: Costco in Puyallup and Safeway stores in Frederickson and Graham.

The lowest price in Thurston County Tuesday was $3.76 a gallon at a Safeway at 3205 Harrison Ave. NW and in South King County at the Costco in Federal Way where gas was available for $3.73 a gallon.
