Construction update: Veltins Bierhalle, a German pub in downtown Tacoma

Staff writerJune 10, 2014

The old home of Neener's is getting a makeover before it debuts as Veltins Bierhalle later this year.

Veltins Bierhalle, a German-themed pub and restaurant from the owners of Renton’s Berliner Pub, is still stuck in construction mode. A hopeful opening date was set for June, but it appears it’ll be at least three more months before an opening in downtown Tacoma.

The extensive build-out and permitting has complicated the timeline for the downtown Tacoma building that had been vacant for years after Neener’s closed at 2401 Pacific Ave. The building was in a sad state, with crumbling infrastructure that long had been neglected.

Right now, earthquake retrofitting and sprinkler updating are underway, but other large projects still need completing in the building that has been ripped down to the studs. Plans were redrawn and resubmitted this year, accounting for a big chunk of the delay.

Husband-wife owners Dennis and Lydia Mascarinas say an opening date is tough to predict, but the optimist in the family (Dennis) thinks a summer opening is possible while the realist (Lydia) thinks a fall opening looks more likely.
